You see it everywhere now. You can hardly watch TV without seeing some advertisement for a website builder, or a commercial on YouTube for getting your business online. And if there has ever been something which was made for business, it’s the internet.
You may be wondering if your particular genre of business is right to warrant getting it online. You may be under the impression that unless you are selling something, what’s the point? Well, you don’t need to participate in e-commerce to get a lot of mileage, not to mention profit, out of the web.
There is probably no category of business, no matter how large or small, that cannot capitalize on the internet, in a variety of ways. So let’s explore some of these ways and how you might be able to put them to your best advantage.
Reason #1 – Don’t you want to be one of the cool kids?
Come on, everybody’s doing it! Well, almost everybody. The truth of the matter is that no matter who you are, getting an online presence is important if for no other reason than one or more of your competitors are. So why give them an advantage?
Remember, it’s not just putting up a website. There are so many places to get online, such as a Facebook page for your business, a LinkedIn account, niche social sites, business directories and so on. However, no matter what you do, whether it’s one or more of these options, we do recommend you get your own website. After all, that’s where you have the most control.
Reason #2 – It’s relatively cheap
Even a huge database-driven complex web application that might cost tens of thousands of dollars is peanuts compared with opening a brick and mortar location. Just think about what a fast food franchise costs, or buying or building a big warehouse and stocking it. When you think of that, a few hundred bucks for a website, even a simple one, is hardly much at all.
And as we mentioned above, there are so many free places to put info about yourself, and what’s even better, they all allow you to link back to your very own website, thus compounding the effects and vastly increasing your exposure.
Reason #3 – The web is where they look
It has been established that over 97% of all buyers, sellers, researchers, looky-loos, nosy Nates, curious info seekers and etc etc etc go to the internet to find things out now. And that includes looking for places to spend their money.
Just look what’s happened in the past few years. If you even still get a yellow pages, it’s probably way thinner than it was five years ago. What does that say? And because it’s so easy to go online, either from a work computer, home desktop, laptop and of course, smart phones and hand held tablets, that’s where people go.
Just look at the TV ads for the iPhone. Somebody hits the button and says, “Google search, blah blah blah” and the phone does an internet search and returns the answer. If you want to be found, you’ve got to stake your claim where people are focusing their eyeballs.
Reason #4 – Marketing
Your website and other internet real estate can be promoted in so many ways, it staggers the imagination. And since almost everyone goes online first, why not plaster that real estate’s address on everything you do. If you have trucks, put your website on them. If you have signs, put it there. Put your website address on your letterhead, postcards, flyers, business cards, YouTube page, Twitter account, T-shirts, pencils, coffee mugs, invoices, checks, hats… Well, you get the idea.
Whenever possible, utilize that virtual real estate. And then of course, there is internet marketing. So many ways to promote your sites exist. You can write articles, blog, build links, participate in forums, network, buy online ads and more. But the thing is, with all of this, you want to create a funnel of motion that narrows as it gets to the end result, your own website.
Reason #5 – You can interact with your customers while you sleep
Think of your website as a tireless, virtually free, sales person that is on duty all day and every day. It can interact with current customers, potential new customers and other employees at any time and in almost any way.
The things a website can do are only limited to your imagination. Even if you don’t sell anything online, your site can provide access to a periodic newsletter, display links to other locations with useful and helpful info, provide a membership or special discount backstage pass, it can send regular updates, and accept user input in a variety of ways.
Think of it this way, Facebook, YouTube, your bank, and Google are just huge, highly complex websites. So your ability to expand yourself and expand what it is you provide your customers knows no bounds.
Reason #6 – Duplication
For any business to be really successful, it must grow beyond the point where it’s founder is also its most dedicated employee. This means that you must be able to duplicate yourself in some way so that the company runs without your having to clock in.
A website provides this in many ways. First, you can use your site as a point of sale. Whether you sell products, want to give your customer the ability to schedule and pay for service, provide a donation point, or even just let users join and pay for memberships, a website that provides this capability is always working and has no hours of operation. So when somebody gets a hankering to spend their money with you, at four in the morning, they can.
Another way a site can duplicate you is by allowing informative material to be copied or linked to by other website owners, thus syndicating your efforts. After a time, this can grow into a hugely profitable circumstance in many ways. The more people want to know and the easier it is for you to give them that knowledge, them more they will expand your means for you.
What’s also great about a website and other internet real estate is that other people can manage it for you. As long as they know what you want done, they can update content, post images, videos and more at the click of a mouse and you do not have to do it yourself. This has a double effect of not only freeing your time but keeping your viewers interested and coming back for more without having to wait as long.
